Chapter Twelve

The Park

Like a nature-deprived animal, I wandered through the city’s park. Tom cut me loose and made me roam in freedom. My pleasure was his distress. He watched me from a close distance. He watched with caution anyone else who came near me. I felt like the president’s daughter, being looked after by scattered chaperones. I drank my freshly squeezed berry fruit smoothie slowly. I enjoyed every step I took and appreciated every sip I drank. The park seemed crowded more than usual. I thought it was because of the perfect weather. The breezy winds and the sunshine attracted the population to walk, jog, or run in that park. I looked at a couple sitting by the benches and tested my new look. They didn’t recognize me at all. I felt excited when I noticed a middle-aged woman holding my novel and reading it. I walked over to her. “Excuse me, what is that you’re reading?”

“It’s the new best seller novel. It’s very controversial, so I wanted to see for myself.”

“Can I take a small look at it, if you don’t mind?” I said, Tom interrupted, “I mind!” He said and pulled me away. “One important rule, no associating with anyone, do you want to get us both in trouble?”

“It’s not like she knew me or I was asking her for help,” I said, walking away from Tom annoyed.

“I sacrificed a lot to get you out for a while, don’t screw it up,” Tom said, trying to catch up with me. I walked ahead of Tom and he followed. I looked around for the loud barking of dogs. Tom looked around curiously. He drew me closer to him as we viewed two large k-9 dogs from a distance, heading our direction. They were being held by two police officers. “I’m scared of dogs, especially if they are chasing and barking at me,” I said nervously. “Walk casually, don’t be scared, they can smell your fear, not your name,” Tom said, encouraging me to pick up my pace and change into a different direction. “They are not chasing you. It’s just your fear is making you paranoid.”

“Paranoid? They’re catching up with us, and you call me paranoid,” I said, looking back.“Stop you two, over there!” the officers called. They picked up their speed from the leashed dogs. They were unable to control the ropes and ran as well as the dogs. “Okay, stop, if they get suspicious, I want you to run to the van, without looking back,” Tom whispered. I felt tense and unstable. Tom took out his cell phone and whispered in it, “Get the van ready and look out.”

“We’re looking for a young female, a Muslim Palestinian, she was kidnapped about two weeks ago. The search for her has driven the city’s officials mad,” said the officer. “How can we help?” Tom stood still and appeared calm. The dogs frightened me and I couldn’t remain calm. “Please keep your dogs away, I’m afraid of dogs,” I said, trying to escape.
